Local Vernacular
Within the practice we have recently been working on new build home projects which focus on high design quality within the context of a rural vernacular. We draw upon references from nearby buildings and the style of the area as well as referring to any design guides set out by the local councils, utilising a research-based strategy to begin the design process. Designing projects within this rural context offers a different set of constraints to the busy urban context of London or other cities in the UK, and requires sensitive analysis of the history and setting within the proposals’ context. We practice community engagement where necessary to ensure the planning process is as smooth as possible.
This also presents an opportunity to reflect on design processes and investigate new materials and construction methods not explored in detail previously. An example of this is a project in Guildford which proposes locally sourced traditional brick, flint walls and copper roofing applied in a more modern way.
We are open to exploring new contexts and applying our knowledge of the planning process to areas outside of London.
